Cleanalgae2value
The CleanAlgae2Value - Demonstrating a cost competitive, sustainable, scalable intensified micro algae bioprocess for the production of food-grade medium value, carbon negative ingredients exceeding market standards - is a CBE JU Innovation Action funded project seeking to optimize the utilization of microalgae potential via a cascading approach to produce white-microalgae-derived medium-price ingredients, using solely CO2 as a carbon source.
About the project
Microalgae offer an attractive solution to many of Europe’s bioeconomy needs, but their large-scale use is still constrained by costs, sensory properties and inconsistent functionality. CleanAlgae2Value tackles these barriers by designing and demonstrating a modular “Micro-Algae Biorefinery Upgrade Module” (MABUM) that can be integrated into existing facilities. The module fractionates white microalgae biomass into protein isolates, protein concentrates, oils, starch-rich fractions and natural pigments, all following a cascading, minimal-waste approach.
The project brings together 15 partners, including Solmeyea as coordinator, technology providers, pilot plants, food and packaging companies and research institutions from several European countries. Over four years, the consortium will build and operate the MABUM at meaningful scale and use its outputs to develop and validate 15 product prototypes, 13 for food applications and 2 for bio-based packaging, while monitoring environmental performance and techno-economic feasibility.
WHAT AIMS TO ACHIEVE
CleanAlgae2Value aims to prove that microalgae can reliably supply medium-value, food-grade ingredients that meet market expectations on taste, functionality and price, while delivering a strongly positive climate balance. By implementing and optimising the MABUM, the project seeks to show that it is possible to produce significant quantities of protein isolates, concentrates, starch fractions and oils at costs that are compatible with real product formulation.
A key objective is to generate a family of demonstrator products for both food and packaging, validating ingredient performance in concrete use cases rather than only at lab scale. This includes the development of recipes, prototypes and consumer-relevant formats that help industry partners judge where microalgae-derived ingredients can realistically replace or complement existing materials.
In parallel, CleanAlgae2Value will document environmental, social and economic impacts, so that policymakers and investors can assess the technology’s contribution to EU climate targets, circular bioeconomy objectives and strategic autonomy in protein and functional ingredients
MAGFI’S CONTRIBUTION
Magfi supports CleanAlgae2Value as the partner responsible for communication, dissemination and visual identity (thus the project “marketing” function). We work with the coordinator and work package leaders to translate a technically complex project into clear, coherent messages for multiple audiences, including food and packaging companies, investors, policymakers and the general public. That role covers the project’s branding, templates, stationery and overall graphic language, as well as the website structure and content.
Our team also develops key messages and narrative frames that connect the technical work on the MABUM to broader themes such as alternative proteins, carbon-negative ingredients and circular value chains. We ensure that these messages are applied consistently across infographics, brochures, banners, social media content and the video script, so that every touchpoint reinforces the same story.
Beyond outward communication, Magfi contributes to internal alignment by supporting partners in presenting their results in a way that fits the project-level impact logic and CBE JU expectations. This includes advising on how to showcase prototypes, pilots and KPIs, helping CleanAlgae2Value build a recognisable presence in the bioeconomy community and laying a solid foundation for future commercialisation and follow-up projects once the current funding period is completed.
