EIT Food SPIN OFF

SPIN OFF was an EIT Food project focused on optimising EIT VIRAL, a nutritional supplement combining spermidine from wheat germ with a eugenol-rich essential oil and advancing it towards a scalable and more cost-effective commercial solution.

About the project

SPIN OFF was built on the results of a previous EIT Food-supported project that developed EIT VIRAL, a nutritional supplement combining spermidine, a polyamine derived from wheat germ, with a broad-spectrum antiviral essential oil rich in eugenol.

The SPIN OFF project focused on significantly optimising the final product formulation and manufacturing process. In particular, it addressed the high costs associated with spermidine extraction and eugenol microencapsulation, with the aim of enabling production at scale while reducing costs.

The project was carried out in 2022 as part of EIT Food’s innovation activities in the area of food and health.

WHAT THE PROJECT AIMED TO ACHIEVE

SPIN OFF aimed to advance the development of EIT VIRAL by introducing innovations to both its formulation and manufacturing process.

The project focused on:

  • Optimising the nutritional supplement’s formulation
  • Improving the manufacturing process
  • Enabling successful production scale-up
  • Reducing production costs
  • Advancing the product towards a viable commercial solution

EIT VIRAL was developed with the aim of reducing the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to infect host cells and replicate within them.

MAGFI’S CONTRIBUTION

Magfi supported the project’s Communication and Dissemination activities, developing the project’s visual identity and a communication and dissemination action plan. This included stakeholder mapping and the development of key communication messages, as well as support for a product-focused website, social media marketing, sector-specific promotion and participation in relevant industry events.
