Biomethane for Carbon and Community (BCC)
The Biomethane Development Office (BDO) is a key output of the Biomethane for Carbon and Community (BCC) project in Ireland, co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the EU Just Transition Fund. Based at the National Bioeconomy Campus in Lisheen, the BDO supports communities, farmers and businesses in exploring the potential for sustainable biomethane development across Ireland’s Just Transition regions.
About the project
The BCC project addresses the limited deployment of biomethane in Ireland and the need to build the knowledge and capacity required for future development. Its objective is to help regions such as Tipperary and the wider Just Transition area prepare for the development of well-designed biomethane projects as the national policy and support framework evolves.
At the centre of the project is the establishment of the BDO at the National Bioeconomy Campus in Lisheen. The office provides an independent source of information and guidance for local authorities, communities, farmers and businesses interested in biomethane development.
Its work covers areas such as feedstock availability, potential project concepts, regulatory considerations and possible end uses, including grid injection and direct supply.
WHAT THE BDO AIMS TO ACHIEVE
The BDO aims to build knowledge and capacity around biomethane development by combining technical analysis with stakeholder engagement and information sharing.
The project explores the availability of suitable feedstocks, potential business models and appropriate locations for biomethane projects, while also supporting information and capacity-building activities for farmers, local authorities and other stakeholders.
Another area of focus is the potential for community and cooperative ownership models, helping to explore how biomethane development could generate economic opportunities in the regions where feedstocks are produced.
The project also considers the relationship between biomethane, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and other activities taking place at the National Bioeconomy Campus.
Through this work, the BCC project aims to help build the knowledge, capacity and local engagement needed for future biomethane development in Ireland’s Just Transition regions.
MAGFI’S CONTRIBUTION
Magfi supported the BCC project through the development of the BDO website.
Our work focused on structuring and presenting information about the BDO and its activities in a clear and accessible way, helping different audiences understand the office’s role and the opportunities and considerations surrounding biomethane development.
The website provides a digital point of reference for the BDO, bringing together information about the project, biomethane development and the support available to communities, farmers, businesses and other stakeholders.
